A week in Cuba is nowhere near long enough.

The Instituto Cubano del Arte e Industria Cinematogaficos (ICAIC) arranged accommodation at the private residence of their most illustrious film director. This came with a chauffeur driven Lada. Searching for film locations is a great way to get off the beaten track and meet wonderful people.

Photographs from these few days evoke many memories: traffic free highways to nowhere, the infamous Bay of Pigs, Hemingway’s house, illicit restaurants in private houses, the insane drumming and chanting fuelled by extremely potent rum at the Santeria priest’s house, the subtle aroma of tobacco leaves drying in the sun, the hospitality of truly dirt poor farmers, incredible musicians, the songs of sugar cane workers at sunset and sweet dark rum in metal mugs.

Many hours of stimulating, educational, enjoyable, occasionally scary personal experiences lie behind each fraction of a second of every picture. What better reasons to be a photographer?
